Footbag Sizes
It's certainly worth mentioning the differences in footbag sizes. A general rule we have noticed is that casual kickers usually like bigger footbags, while freestyle footbag players usually shred with smaller footbags. If you just like kicking a footbag around and not digging into the tricks and combos too deeply, might prefer a medium or larger sized footbag. If you are into the technical freestyle tricks and combos, smaller to medium footbags will probably work better for you. Here are the range of sizes we have in footbags. This information is listed on each footbag product page.
Large size Footbags: 2.3" diameter or larger
Medium size Footbags: 2.2" to 2.0" diameter
Small size Footbags: Below 2.0" diameter
Footbag Classification System and Level Ratings:
Recently, the think tank at Fourkast devised an even deeper classification/rating system for choosing footbags. This was done to provide further assistance in helping you find the correct footbag for your needs. Here are the two systems to better help pinpoint the footbag for you!
Classification System:
As seen above, with this system the footbags are broken into three easy areas:
Casual Kicker (Beginner) Footbag (CK)
A Casual Kicker is someone who enjoys casually playing when the occasion arises, or is just beginning to play footbag in general. This is essentially the everyday 'hacky sack' player. This category also covers people who are just beginning to learn footbag tricks (toe stalls, flying kicks and so on). Footbags in this category are at least the average size (2 to 2.3 inches diameter) or larger. Many footbags here have either sand or plastic bead filler, and tend to be a little bit lighter. They are designed to be easily spotted and kicked. Some of these footbags also function as entry level freestyle footbags (Sidekick 14 Footbag), which means they can be stalled easily. Other footbags in this category are meant for just kicking, such as the Fair Trade Flyer Footbag.
Unique (Misc.) Footbags
These type of footbags are a bit out of the ordinary. Each type of footbag in this category has a unique element that sets it apart from regular footbags, and each other. Examples of these types of footbags are the Fourkast Footbag Fuggler, and the Chain Mail Footbag. These types of bags can be kicked by anyone looking for a fun and different way to play footbag!
Freestyle (Pro) Footbags
If you are looking to improve your freestyle skills, these are the footbags for you. Whether you are a serious freestyle footbag player or just getting serious, any number of footbags in this category are designed to help you improve your skills or maintain the high technical game you are accustomed to. For beginner/intermediate freestylers, these footbags will certainly help you improve. For professional level freestylers, these footbags were specifically designed to be engaged on a highly technical level. Most footbags in this category average a size of 2.0 inches diameter or less. The small size of the footbag allows for greater dexterity windows, which essentially means that when your foot is circling the bag, there is less likelihood that you will accidentally hit it before the stall. Almost every top level player uses these types of footbag, popular is the 32 panel design such as the Ultra 32 Footbag, Landes 32 Footbag, or the Abshire 32 Footbag.
Footbag Level Rating System
This system breaks down the footbags by attaching a simple numeric value to each footbag. Each numeric classification represents a skill level attached to the footbag, basically who the footbag was designed for. Below is the breakdown;
1000
900
800
700
600
500
400
1000
The highest level of professional footbags. These footbags are smaller and heavier usually. Shredders can perform high dexterity moves and combos efficiently. Most are of the 32 panel design and made of the highest quality synthetic suede. Almost every footbag in this category is hand stitched by professional level footbag players, thus their top level freestyle utilization is assured. Their set rating (how well the footbag rises off the foot after a stall) and dex rating (how well you can circle the bag with your foot) are the highest, thus a player will be able to maximize their combo potential with these bags. These are the pentacle footbags for top level freestyle play, but may be a bit less accessible to the casual kicker. Footbags in this category include;
Abshire 32 Footbag, Abshire 32 Mini Footbag, Abshire Fearless 55 Footbag, Landes 32 Footbag, Turtle 32 Footbag, Cline Time 32 Footbag
900
These footbags are also designed for a higher level of freestyle play, but can be accessed and appreciated by everyone looking to improve their skills or maintain a level of freestyle. Basically, they are more universal freestyle footbags. Their set/stall/dex ratings are high, bags in this category usually have a short break-in time. 'Hacky sack' players wanting to evolve into freestyle footbag players will eventually need to start using footbags in this category. Included in this class is the Fourkast 14 Footbag, Ultra 32 Footbag
800
This is the high level hybrid footbag category. An 800 level footbag can be used for a high level of freestyle play, but just as easily be used by the casual kicker ('hacky sack' player) who has no idea or interest regarding the more technical tricks. Footbags in this category run a medium size (2.0-2.3 inches diameter), and are of medium weight (45 inches diameter). A good example of this type of footbag is the Mr. Sandbag Footbag, and the Ultra 32 XL Footbag.
700
This is the universal class. 'Hacky sack' players and freestylers can appreciate these footbags for their various properties. Footbags in this category are typically used by intermediate or beginner freestylers, or casual kickers. They are typically larger and lighter, and are extremely easy to stall. Combos and tricks can be executed with these footbags (which earns them the 700 level rating), thus if you are just getting started learning tricks, or simply casually kick, these footbags are certainly for you! For the freestylers, the footbags are very visual and are great for performing. Included in this category are;
Sidekick 14 Footbag, Phoenix 4 Footbag
600
These are great casual kicker bags. Footbags in this category and the 700 level category are closely related, with the exception that higher level combos may be a little more difficult to execute in the 600 level range (their set ratings are usually lower). 600 level footbags are simply fun footbag all around. They tend to run a little larger (2.5 or higher) and are lighter, mainly to maximize easy kicking and stalling. If you like just liking around the "hacky sack", this is a good type of footbag for you. Included in this category are;
Solestice 12 Footbag, Phoenix 4 Mini Footbag, Hacky Sack Impact Footbag
500
This level ranking is occupied only by Unique (Misc.) Footbags. These footbags are designed for out of the ordinary play, and are usually made of varying materials. Their set, dex, and stall ratings are almost always lower, but the fun factor is way up! Casual 'hacky sack' players should really appreciate these category footbags. Included in this category are;
Chain Mail Footbag, Fourkast Footbag Fuggler
400
Footbags in this category are straight up for kicking. If you enjoy casually kicking a footbag around a circle of people, power kicking (kicking the footbag high in the air and chasing it), or doing flying kicks, this bag is for you. These types of footbags are usually packed full of filler (usually beads) for better reflectiveness (bouncing higher off the kick). The dex/set ratings on these footbags are very low, and stalling is limited. But if you want to have fun working your kicks and want to see the bag go high in the air, this is the footbag for you if you consider yourself a general 'hacky sack' player. We recommend the Fair Trade Flyer for this. Fourkast Fair Trade Flyer, Hacky Sack Crochet Footbag
Here is an example of a footbag profile breakdown. Each footbag has different stats.
